Wasyl Lukyonovitch Jarosz passed away peacefully at home on January 16, 2009, surrounded by his family and grandchildren, as the early winters sunshine filled his bedroom. Born on December 5, 1922, in Berezotocha, Ukraine, Wasyl lost his father and was separated from his family after the Soviet government confiscated the familys farm in the 1930s. During World War II, Wasyl was drafted into the Red Army and ultimately imprisoned in a German prisoner of war camp. After the war he found his way to a displaced persons camp in Mittenwald, Germany where he met Walentina Ruduk, who would be his wife for 62 years. In 1950, Wasyl and Walentina left Germany, traveling 5,000 miles by boat and train with their two-year old daughter, Lucy, to a new country and new home in Montana.
